I draw and sculpt to realize connections between patterns in nature and my own habits of being and beholding. I’m interested in what a surface can hide, reveal or contain.
Motifs where one’s eyes are challenged by a confusing abundance — such as a forest or facade of foliage — are the focus of my observational drawings. Using pen on paper, I create a luminous surface of varied, textured marks that straddle the familiar and imaginary, obscuring depth even as they reveal form.
Sculpting ceramic vessels made of unglazed earthenware, I develop this relationship of internal space to surface. Currently, I’m concentrated on building tall, voluminous skeletal structures inspired by architecture and the radial symmetry of plants. The outer shell of these works alternately conceals and reveals the intimate spaces within, inviting viewers to contemplate the mysteries of the visual and the invisible in nature and themselves.
